Which team will you be rooting for to win the Superbowl? Or maybe, if you’re like me, you’ll be watching the game so you have an excuse to eat all the food. Whip up a batch of these Superbowl cupcakes to take to your party and you’re sure to score big with everyone in attendance.

Make a batch of your favorite cupcakes. You could also just follow in our footsteps and use a box mix (don’t judge us, okay?). After you take your cupcakes out of the oven and let them cool, it’s time to frost them!

Please do yourself a favor and use our chocolate buttercream frosting recipe . . .

Cream together:

  • 1/2 cup of shortening
  • 1/2 cup of butter

  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1/2 bag of powdered sugar (2 lb bag)
  • 1/4 cup of water

Add a little bit of powdered sugar and water at a time while mixing.

After frosting is mixed, take a little bit of it and set aside in a bowl. We will use it later. Then add about 1/3 cup of cocoa and 1 tablespoon of water to your main bowl of frosting. Beat together until frosting is chocolaty.

This frosting is dreamy. I could eat it with a spoon. The best part is that it stays good for up to two weeks and there is no need to refrigerate it. So if you have extra frosting on hand, don’t throw it out! Save it and make some other tasty treats.

Put some frosting in a bag and squeeze it out, making a football shape on your cupcakes. They don’t quite look like footballs yet? No worries. We are about to fix that. Take the frosting you set aside and did not add cocoa to, and put it in a bag. Squeeze it out to make laces on your footballs.
